Boost your health with these 8 easy tips for a spring clean

At last it’s spring. The days are slowly getting longer and the temperatures are gradually creeping up.

I don’t know about you but at this time of year I start to think about revitalisation in all aspects of my life. The house gets a bit of a spruce up, the garden gets some much-needed attention and I generally have an urge to have a bit of a clean out. I think it is all part of a desire to be “lighter”. Do you feel the same way? Are you cleaning out cupboards and showing your garden some love?

But what about you? What about your body? Does it need a bit of love and attention after a long, cold winter indoors?

As the weather warms and we come out of our winter hibernation it’s the perfect opportunity to take a look at your diet and lifestyle as it currently stands and maybe do a bit of a “spring clean” there as well.

You may not want to do a “full on detox” and that’s fine. Detox programs take a bit of planning and commitment. However, there are lots of simple things you can do to help your health.

8 simple tips to give your body a “spring clean”

  1. Check your water intake…as the days warm up, our need for hydration will increase. Aim to reduce your alcohol, soft drink and caffeine intake and swap it for water whenever you can. Water is a wonderful cleanser. Boosting your water intake helps every cell in your body.
  2. Start your day with a warm water and lemon juice to kick start your digestion.
  3. Increase your fresh fruit and vegetables. It can be difficult to eat salads and fresh fruit in the dark of winter but now that the weather is warming up, aim to have some with every meal or snack. There are dozens of options at this time of year so there’s no excuse for not enjoying salads and “lighter” meals that still tickle your taste buds.
  4. As you increase your fruit and vegetables, reduce your intake of refined carbohydrates and processed foods.
  5. Spring clean the pantry and the fridge. Toss out all the foods and jars that are not adding to your health (e.g. excess sugars, salts, preservatives and additives and/or overly processed) as well as anything that is old or past its use-by date. Make room for fresh “real” food.
  6. Get moving again. Make the most of the longer days to increase your activity. Update your phone with a new playlist or audio book, borrow a dog or commit to walking with a friend…whatever it takes to get you moving. Exercise is vital for the lymphatic system and helps to remove waste products from our body.
  7. Enjoy some sunshine (in moderation) and fresh air. Take some deep breaths to bring life-giving oxygen into your lungs and fully expel carbon dioxide.
  8. Give yourself just one goal to focus on…it might be better skin, weight management, energy, self-esteem or something else. Set yourself a plan to make a change. If you can stick to your plan for even just a week or two I am confident you will feel better for it and that’s a good start and a good motivator to keep going.

If you decide that this is not enough, you may want to do a detox. If you do decide to embark on a detox program, please do it under the supervision of a qualified health professional. If your diet and lifestyle has been less than great for some time, a detox can actually make you feel quite unwell if not handled carefully.
