give yourself the best chance of conceiving a healthy baby

Preconception Care

The essential 12 week preconception care program for pregnancy

Falling pregnant is more complicated than you might think. Planning is essential, as nutrition and lifestyle (especially stress and sleep) can make a big difference to your fertility. Our 12 week preconception care program is carefully designed to improve your overall health and wellness to boost your chances of conceiving.

The program requires both partners be involved as it takes two to make a baby! The health of both partners affects your chances of conception, having a healthy pregnancy, the health of your newborn baby and even your grandchildren.

The program includes:

  • an initial 90 minute consultation with both partners (if easier, this can be separate 45 minute consultations)
  • a second consultation at week 2 to further tailor your dietary and lifestyle advice
  • all materials and tools to help track your diet and menstrual cycle
  • 2 further consultations (or separate if preferred) at weeks 6 and 12 of the program

  • a quick ‘check in’ appointment with the woman at weeks 5 and 9
  • nutritional and dietary advice for optimum fertility for both partners
  • vital ‘practitioner prescribed’ nutritional supplements for 12 weeks for both partners
  • the option of 25% off yoga classes in The Studio for the duration of your program

Why 12 weeks?

Planning for pregnancy should start at least 3 months before you begin trying to conceive as that is approximately how long it takes for eggs and sperm to mature in preparation for the big event!

It also gives the woman some time to get to know her menstrual cycle so that when you do start trying for a baby, you know when your peak fertile time is each month.

What makes this preconception care program special?

This program takes into account your full health history and addresses your individual nutritional needs. It also provides advice and suggestions for making healthy lifestyle choices to enhance your chances of conception in the future.

You are guided through the program with your naturopath, Lee Copeland, via regular face to face consultations. In addition to providing coaching and education around nutritional, environmental and lifestyle factors which can enhance fertility, Lee will spend time coaching the female partner on how to track her menstrual cycle, helping her understand the stages of her cycle and her fertile window. In addition, both partners will be provided with necessary, high quality nutritional supplements for the duration of the program.

At the completion of the program, you will be confident in your knowledge of your menstrual cycle, ovulation and fertile time as well as having the tools and tips to optimise your nutrition and overall health.

Personal contact with your naturopath, Lee Copeland

Throughout the 12 weeks Lee will be close at hand to answer any questions you may have and ensure you are getting the most out of your program.

At the commencement of the program you will have a 90 minute face to face consultation (or two separate 45 minute consultations). This enables her to make a thorough assessment of both partner’s current health, diet and lifestyle. It will determine if the program is right for you or if there are other issues which need to be addressed before commencing the program or whilst completing the program.

The second consultation occurs at week 2 and allows for the couple to complete questionnaires to further tailor dietary and lifestyle advice. The following consultations at week 6 and 12 of the program will be conducted with both partners and will evaluate your progress with dietary and lifestyle recommendations and continue to tailor advice to enhance your chances of conception. These consultations will also be an opportunity for reviews of the woman’s menstrual charts to allow a deep understanding of her cycle and the “fertile window”.

In addition, 2 quick consultations with the woman at weeks 5 and 9 will be undertaken specifically to provide further coaching and evaluation of the menstrual cycle tracking data.

Frequently asked questions about the preconception care program

We are not ready to fall pregnant just yet, is this program suitable for us?

Yes. This program is designed to prepare for pregnancy in the future rather than to fall pregnant during the program. Planning for pregnancy is essential to ensure the optimal functioning of your reproductive system by making good dietary and lifestyle choices every day.

Is the preconception care program suitable for everyone?

The preconception care program is perfect for you if:

  • you are planning to fall pregnant in the next 12 months and are not currently trying to conceive
  • you do not have any significant reproductive health issues
  • you are under 36 years of age (if you are over 36 you may still be suitable but Lee may recommend initial screening tests for one or both partners)
  • you are not currently taking hormonal forms of contraception (i.e. the pill). The program is suitable if you plan to cease these forms of contraception at the commencement of the program

Note: If you are currently trying to conceive, have had issues conceiving previously, are currently undergoing IVF or have diagnosed reproductive issues, this program is not suitable for you. Please contact Lee on 03 9620 9503 to discuss your current situation as an individual treatment plan can be tailored to best support your needs.

How do we know if we would benefit from a preconception care program?

You will benefit from the program if you:

  • are unsure of if or when you ovulate
  • you don’t know when your fertile window is during your cycle
  • you could improve your diet and need help to improve your nutritional status
  • you need help to make healthier lifestyle choices
  • you want to optimise the health of your future baby

What results can we expect from completing the preconception care program?

There are many health benefits of completing the preconception care program.

You will be fully equipped to understand your menstrual cycle so that when the time comes to actively ‘try’ for a baby you know when the best time for conception is each month. This reduces the stress associated with wondering if you are “hitting the mark”.

Your 12 week program sets you up for long term healthy dietary and lifestyle changes, optimising the function of your reproductive system as well as improving your overall health. By adopting the dietary and lifestyle suggestions you are likely to have more energy and vitality, feel less stressed or at least manage your stress levels more effectively, and feel confident you are giving yourself the best chance of conceiving a healthy baby when the time comes.

Why is it important for the male to be included in the program?

Quite simply conception require healthy sperm and eggs. A healthy pregnancy can’t happen if sperm quality is not where it should be and healthy sperm come from a healthy man. It takes approximately 100 days for sperm to develop so planning for pregnancy will give you the best chance of conception and also the best chance of a healthy pregnancy.

Also, research is now confirming what we already suspected; that the health of the man is as important as the health of the woman, for pregnancy, as well as the ongoing health of the baby, child and adult.

What if we have other health issues unrelated to our plans for pregnancy, is this program right for us?

During the initial consultation, any health issues will be discussed and factored into your program. If any additional naturopathic support and treatment is required it would be over and above this program.

Lee may also suggest at the initial consultation that treatment of your other health complaints need to be addressed before completing the preconception care program to ensure you get the most out of the program. Lee can tailor your treatment plan specific to your needs following the initial consultation.
